Cancun
History and Overview:
Once the birthplace of Mayan Kings and the dwelling place of ancient spirits,. Cancun is now Mexico’s most popular year-round destination. Developed in the late 60’s and early 70’s specifically as a resort destination, it has attracted one of the largest communities of luxury hotels and American-style shopping malls.
Beyond this 14-mile stretch of crystal coastline lies a vast expanse of Mayan history, literally. With over 200 archaeological sites, the Yucatan Peninsula is by far one of the richest historical treasures in the world. The unique climate and thick vegetation has preserved the ancient temples and monuments. Independent and guided tours will escort you to learn more about the ancient Mayan civilization.
Outdoor Activities:
Cancun offers an overwhelming variety of entertainment and activities. Enjoy water sports like sea kayaking, windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving and snorkeling. A ferry to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel can be arranged for day tours and activities which include snorkeling, lunch and shopping.
Attractions:
Now that you’ve come to the Yucatan, revel in its history by exploring the many nearby Mayan archaeological sites. Xcaret, Chichen-Itza, Tulum, Coba, and many others are just a few hours away. You can take a tour with an English- speaking guide or, if you’re feeling adventurous, rental jeeps are available for excursions along the Tulum Corridor and nearby Playa del Carmen.
Shopping and Nightlife:
Cancun has duty-free prices (except on tobacco and alcohol) so you can find quality items from around the world at Mexican prices. Browse the public market for Mexican rugs, jewelry and other goods. There are lots of first class shopping malls for those who want to shop in the comfort of air conditioning.
Nightlife offers something for everyone from discos to fiestas, a wide array of restaurants, Mexican charreadas (rodeos), dinner shows and live folkloric bands.
