Puerto Vallarta

History and Overview:
Puerto Vallarta - PV
At the foot of the Sierra Madre, surrounded by lush tropical jungles rests the colonial city of Puerto Vallarta. Inhabited by Spanish explorers in the 1500's, it was used as a hiding place for pirates plundering the Pacific Coast. By the early 1900's it had evolved into a small fishing village that continued to grow as a port for silver mining. Visited by such renowned celebrities as Liz Taylor, Richard Burton and John Huston, Puerto Vallarta's attraction as an up-and-coming destination grew. In recent years, it has flourished into Mexico's most romantic and versatile destination.

In addition to its history and culture, Puerto Vallarta 's diversity can also be seen in its five distinctive resort areas. From Nuevo Vallarta, rich with condos and superb resort amenities, to Marina Vallarta, including 440 acres of deluxe hotels and attractions south of the airport. The hotel zone lies between the marina and the charming downtown area. The most secluded region is south of town, Playa Mismaloya, which was the backdrop for the 1964 movie, "Night of the Iguana."

Outdoor Activities:

Puerto Vallarta has something for everyone. Cruise down the Yelapa for a south seas atmosphere, ride horses , or take a jungle hike to a 150-ft waterfall. Watch the matadors fearlessly conquer local bulls in the local bullfights. Or hop on the Bora Bora Trimaran, one of the largest sailing ships ever built, and sail to Playa Los Animas. Venture to Los Arcos for a diving excursion. Or just relax on the beach with a good book. With Puerto Vallarta, you may never run out of things to see or places to go.

Attractions:

Puerto Vallarta is the artistic center of Mexico's west coast. Galleries are filled with the works of world-renowned artists and famous Huichol Indian work, so a trip to PV would not be complete without a gallery tour. You should also stroll the Malecon (seaside promenade) and watch local artists at work. Also visit the Iglesia Guadalupe Church with its stunning crowned steeple. If you're looking for history, art and culture, you don't have to look far!
